Chapter 12: Blogs, Vlogs, Podcast, and Webinars
According to our textbook, 77% of people on the internet
read blogs; I am not one of them. I guess we are all technically blog
users/readers taking Principles of Social Media now. I recently caught myself
watching a "fashion/lifestyle influencer" on YouTube. I do like the
concept of filming yourself, trying new things, and meeting new people. Mainly
because you can look back on your life at any point in time and see where your
head was.
Before Principles of Social Media, I had yet to hear about
the different blog sites the book mentioned, like WordPress, Wix, and
Medium.com. I also figured Tumblr was something for an older crowd, but it
seems it was popular for young adults in the 2010s. Blogs also provide brands
and businesses a way to spread their vision and increase the number of eyes on
their stories. Some of the things our textbook points out as benefits for
marketers on blogs are the businesses participating in blogging, increasing their
brand awareness, and allowing them to have honest conversations with their
customers. Ikea Ideas is a great example of a company that uses blogs to share
different design ideas for their furniture with customers, which is huge for
homeowners or people who recently purchased furniture; it doesn’t necessarily need to be an Ikea purchase.
Another instrument of communication the book talked about is podcasts. Now, podcasts catch my attention a bit more because I can listen to people's commentary while doing a task, and I don’t have to devote all of my attention to it while I consume. A podcast I used to listen to frequently is “Million Dollaz Worth of Game”, sponsored by Barstool Sports. It’s a weekly podcast that targets hip-hop, sports, and African American urban culture. I find it interesting that most of the top podcasts fall into similar categories. Almost like people enjoy listening to the same things, just in different contexts.
I thought your comments about podcasts were very interesting because I also follow and listen to a few podcasts from Barstool Sports. Although I do not listen to them frequently, I do love a podcast for a long drive or a day at work. I believe podcasts will only get more popular as time goes on.
